HERE ***** CHARLES LANCASTER .450 x 3-1/4" BLACK POWDER EXPRESS DOUBLE RIFLE SN 7417. Built in 1894 it has 30 inch barrels with a swamped top rib & "doll's head" extension. The left barrel is marked: "CHARLES LANCASTER 151 NEW BOND ST. LONDON" THe right barrel is marked: "NON-FOULING SMOOTH OVAL BORE RIFLING" The round bodied action sides are marked: "CHARLES LANCASTER LONDON" on both. The bottom plate on the action is marked: "PATENTED BLOCK SAFETY". Three leaf folding express sights. The toplever action body has sculpted "percussion fences". There is a lever lock behind the toplever that locks the sliding safety. The top rib is fitted with scope mounts. No scope is present. Double triggers. Sling swivels. Walnut semi-pistolgrip stock with a 15 inch pull to the original chequered steel buttplate. Stock has cheekpiece for a right handed shooter.
THIS BEAUTIFUL RIFLE HAS JUST BEEN BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED TO "AS-NEW" CONDITION BY MASTER GUNSMITH JIM KELLY OF THE DARLINGTON GUN WORKS. THE PICTURES WITH THE GREEN BACKGROUND WERE TAKEN BEFORE RESTORATION. THE PICTURES WITH THE RED BACKGROUND WERE TAKEN AFTER RESTORATION. I AM IN THE PROGRESS OF OBTAINING A RESEARCH LETTER FROM ENGLAND ON THIS FINE GUN.
Condition: Very good to excellant overall. Assisted opening action locks up tight. There are surviving records for this rifle that are held by Charles Lancaster & Co. Ltd., Rhome Cottage, Capel Road, Rusper, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 4PZ that have been ordered but not yet received.
CHARLES LANCASTER LEARNED HIS TRADE WITH NON OTHER THAT JOSEPH MANTON and began on his own in 1811 at 10 Craven Bhuldings, Drury Lane moving 1n 1818 to 26 York Street, Gloucester Road, Coach and Horse Yard. He died in 1847 but his name continued on with William and Alfred Lancaster and various London locations.
