Robert Mole & Sons of Birmingham, England manufactured weapons for the Confederacy under the authorization of Edward Tiball, Chief Clerk of the Confederate Naval Department. Most were imported by Fraser & Trenholm through the firm of Courtney & Tennant, Charleston, South Carolina. George B. Tennant, a partner in that firm, was his agent in England. Tennant was instrumental in the purchase of practically everything used by the C.S. Navy, from the large calibre cannon to ship's china bearing the C.S. Naval coat-of-arms.
